Columnea minor

Native to western Colombia and western Ecuador, it is a climbing epiphyte of rain forests and montane forests, growing on tree trunks and branches. Its slender stems trail downward. The leaves range from oval to lance-shaped, with pointed tips and prominent veins; their shape and coloring vary considerably between plants. Flowers emerge from a hairy pink to red calyx divided into many narrow, feathery segments. The petals form a long tube that may be red, pink, or dark purple, ending in yellow lobes with narrow yellow appendages between them. The flowers can fertilize themselves, although their natural pollinator has not been confirmed. Photographed in Chocó, Ecuador.
