Columnea kienastiana
Native to northwestern Colombia and western Ecuador, this perennial epiphytic herb grows on trees in wet tropical forests. Its hanging stems carry opposite leaves that are nearly equal in size. Leaves vary from oval to lance-shaped. Red tubular flowers, about 1½ inches long, open into two unequal lips, with the lower lip bending backward. The green sepals surrounding each flower have nearly smooth edges or a few small teeth near their bases. As in other members of its genus, the fruits are fleshy berries. Photographed in Puyo, Ecuador.
