Hairy yellow tubular Columnea fuscihirta flower beneath densely hairy buds and stems

Columnea fuscihirta

Native to Colombia and Ecuador, it is an epiphytic subshrub of wet montane forests. It grows on other plants for support, with shoots that have distinct upper and lower sides. Golden yellow to brown bristly hairs cover its stems and leaves. The opposite leaves are markedly unequal within each pair; their undersides are green with red tips. The flowers have bright yellow tubular petals and small, inconspicuous bracts. Green sepals with deeply divided edges surround the base of the flower tube. These features distinguish it from related species with large, brightly colored floral bracts. Its fruits are fleshy berries. Photographed near Puyo, Ecuador.
