Clusia alata
This plant is a tree native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, growing in wet tropical forests. Its thick, leathery leaves grow in opposite pairs and have rounded tips and narrowed bases that extend into short, winged leaf stalks. The stems release a milky to yellow latex when damaged. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants; the male flowers have numerous pale stamens surrounded by fleshy petals. The female flowers develop into fleshy capsules crowned by persistent stigmas. The capsules split open to expose small seeds with brightly colored coverings. Photographed near Boquete, Panama.
