Clitoria ternatea (Butterfly Pea)

Native to India and Sri Lanka to Malaysia, Burma, and the Philippine islands, this vining plant is noted for its striking blue flowers. Its ornamental value is appreciated globally, especially in warmer climates and different varieties come in different colors. The plant has been associated with several health benefits. Specifically, it has demonstrated antioxidant, antidiabetic, and hepatoprotective properties. Its flowers, used in medicine, have been formulated into beverages with functional benefits, particularly showcasing antioxidant activities. On a commercial scale, its flower, known for its blue hue, has found a place in the food industry as a natural colorant.
