Clethra mexicana

Native from Mexico to Panama, this tree grows in moist forests, secondary woodland, and along forest edges. It can reach about 66 feet tall. Its alternate, toothed leaves have prominent veins, green upper surfaces, and brown hairs beneath; young branches are also hairy. Small white to cream flowers form elongated clusters and attract honeybees. The hairy capsules turn brown and split open to release numerous tiny seeds. In Guatemala, it occurs between about 160 and 8,200 feet. Its wood is used for fuel and crafts. Photographed in Panama.
