Clerodendrum schmidtii flower with five broad white petals and slender stamens extending outward

Clerodendrum schmidtii

This plant is a shrub native to Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, where it grows in several forest types. Its young branches are four-sided and softly hairy. Opposite, papery leaves have a rough surface, oval to oblong blades, and often heart-shaped bases. The branched flower clusters hang down from the leaf axils. Cream-white flowers have a tubular base and five spoon-shaped lobes, with four long stamens projecting beyond them. The five-lobed calyx is reddish or pale greenish white and hairy on both surfaces. Nearly round, four-lobed fruits ripen dark purple and retain the calyx. Photographed in Florida.
