Citrus japonica is native to southern China and has been cultivated for centuries before spreading to the West. The Nagami variety is one of the most widely grown types and is particularly recognized for its oval fruits that measure about one to two inches long. Unlike most citrus species, the peel of the kumquat is sweet and edible, while the flesh is tangy and slightly acidic. The Nagami kumquat is commonly cultivated in subtropical regions. The fruits are eaten whole, used in preserves, marmalades, candies, and beverages. Kumquat trees are also cultivated ornamentally due to their compact growth and the striking appearance of the golden-orange fruits against dark green foliage. Photographed in Florida.
