Citrus hystrix, commonly known as kaffir lime or makrut lime, is native to tropical Southeast Asia. It grows as a thorny shrub or small tree, and is notable for its aromatic leaves and distinctively bumpy, green fruits. The white, fragrant flowers develop in clusters and give way to the fruit, which is smaller than most limes and valued for its intense aroma. The plant is extensively cultivated for culinary uses, with its leaves serving as a staple ingredient in Thai and Indonesian cuisines, particularly in soups, curries, and stir-fries. The fruit peel is also used for flavoring and in traditional medicine. Essential oils extracted from both the leaves and peel are employed in perfumery, cleaning products, and as a natural insect repellent. Photographed in Florida.
