Cistanthe grandiflora, commonly known as the rock purslane, originates from Chile where it thrives in arid and rocky slopes of the coastal ranges and Andean foothills. It grows as a perennial succulent herb that forms dense clumps with fleshy foliage adapted to conserve water in dry conditions. Its most striking feature is its large, vibrant flowers, usually ranging from bright pink to purple, with five broad petals and a cluster of contrasting orange stamens that make it stand out in bloom. The species is valued ornamentally and is cultivated in Mediterranean climates, for its drought tolerance and long-lasting floral displays. The flowers open during the day and close at night.
