Close-up of Cinchona officinalis cluster showing white star-shaped flowers with hairy edges and unopened buds
Cinchona officinalis

Native to the Andean regions of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, Cinchona officinalis is a small to medium-sized tree traditionally valued for its medicinal bark. The flowers of Cinchona officinalis are small, tubular, and star-shaped with distinctive hairy margins on the petals. They appear in clusters and are usually white to pale pink. The bark of this species has been used in traditional medicine to reduce fever, aid digestion, and stimulate appetite. Photographed in Ecuador.
