Close-up of Chuquiraga jussieui flower with bright orange tubular florets emerging from a compact cone-like head surrounded by green foliage
Chuquiraga jussieui

Native to the high Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, Chuquiraga jussieui is a shrub adapted to extreme elevations often exceeding 10,000 feet. Known locally as Flor del Inca, this species thrives in páramo ecosystems where it withstands cold temperatures, strong winds, and high ultraviolet exposure. The plant produces striking inflorescences composed of bristly involucral bracts and vivid orange tubular florets that resemble torch-like structures. These inflorescences are not only visually prominent but are also traditionally noted for their medicinal value. In Andean folk medicine, Chuquiraga jussieui has been used to treat respiratory ailments such as bronchitis and as an infusion for digestive discomfort. Scientific studies have indicated antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in its extracts. Photographed in Cotopaxi National Park, Ecuador.
