Choisya ternata

Native to central Mexico, Mexico Gulf, northeastern Mexico, and southwestern Mexico, this is a shrub in the Rutaceae family. including Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona​. This species exhibits a compact and rounded habit, maturing to a height of about 4-8 feet, and its width often mirrors its height. Its leaves, uniquely clustered in threes, release an aroma resembling basil. The white, star-shaped flowers also emit a pleasant scent. It’s is drought tolerant and capable of withstanding temperatures down to 14°F. Various cultivars have been developed to offer yellow foliage and pink flowers. These cultivars, along with the species itself, have been honored with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, reflecting their exceptional qualities and suitability for UK gardens. ​​ Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
