Chlorophanes spiza (Green Honeycreeper)

The Green Honeycreeper, is a small bird in the tanager family. It is the only member of its genus and is predominantly found in the tropical New World, ranging from southern Mexico to Brazil and including Trinidad. This species has a striking appearance, with the male being mainly blue-tinged green, having a black head and a mostly bright yellow bill. Females, on the other hand, are grass-green, paler on the throat, and lack the male's iridescence and black head. Both sexes are about 5.1–5.5 inches long and weigh between 0.49 to 0.81 ounces, with an average weight of about 0.67 ounces. The Green Honeycreeper inhabits dense forests and secondary woodlands, usually remaining high in the canopy but may descend along forest edges, in clearings, or in gardens. It typically lives in pairs and often joins mixed honeycreeper-tanager flocks. This bird is a forest canopy species, less dependent on nectar compared to other honeycreepers, with fruit and seeds constituting 60% of its diet, nectar 20%, and insects 15%. The female builds a small cup nest in a tree and incubates the clutch of two brown-blotched white eggs for 13 days. The Green Honeycreeper is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its extremely large range and very large population size, estimated to be between 500,000 and 4,999,999 individuals. However, the population trend is observed to be decreasing. This bird is recognized for its seven subspecies, each with distinct geographical distributions. It displays sexual dimorphism, evident in the differing colorations of males and females. Photographed in the western Andes mountain range of Colombia (Cordillera Occidental).
