Chloroleucon tortum is a rare leguminous species native to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. This tree is characterized by its highly contorted trunk and branches, which give it an unusual sculptural appearance that has made it valued in bonsai cultivation. In its natural environment, it can reach up to forty feet in height, growing in sandy coastal soils and open areas where it is exposed to full sun. Its compound pinnate leaves fold up at night or during heavy rain, a nyctinastic movement that reduces water loss and offers protection to the plant. The flowers of Chloroleucon tortum are globular clusters composed of numerous long, white stamens that emerge prominently from a small base, giving them a brush-like appearance. These blooms appear primarily in the summer and are followed by flat, elongated seed pods. Photographed in Florida.
