Cestrum megalophyllum

Native from southern Mexico to Peru and from the Lesser Antilles to Guyana, this shrub or small tree belongs to the nightshade family and grows in wet tropical forests. In Colombia, it occurs between about 230 and 9,100 feet. Its long, pointed leaves can reach about 12 inches, with prominent veins underneath. Greenish-white tubular flowers develop in clusters on older branches. In Costa Rica, the flowers have been observed opening at night. The berries turn dark purple when ripe and contain one to three seeds. Members of this genus are poisonous if eaten. Photographed in Ecuador.
