A close-up of Ceratostema megabracteatum showing its dense cluster of tubular flowers with red-orange bracts and star-shaped dark purple petal tips, growing along a moss-covered rock in its native Andean habitat
Ceratostema megabracteatum

Ceratostema megabracteatum is native to the high Andes of Ecuador. Its growth is typically as a shrub adapting to steep, mossy slopes and rocky areas. The flowers of Ceratostema megabracteatum are notable for their striking appearance: bright red to orange tubular corollas ending in reflexed, dark purple petal lobes. The bracts at the base of the inflorescence are much larger than in most related species, hence the name megabracteatum. The plant grows in environments where epiphytic mosses, lichens, and orchids are also abundant, reflecting its preference for humid, cool conditions with frequent mist. Photographed in Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve, Ecuador.
