Originating from Mexico, this species, commonly known as the Old Man Cactus, is a notable member of the cacti family due to its distinct appearance. It is a columnar and erect cactus that can reach heights between 16 to 50 feet, displaying slender, silvery-white columns densely covered with long, white silky hairs. These hairs, which are actually modified spines, serve to protect the plant from frost and sun, giving it a distinctive "shaggy" appearance reminiscent of an old man's hair, hence the common name. This hairy coat gradually disappears as the plant ages, revealing formidable sharp yellow central spines beneath the soft-looking exterior. It may take between 10 to 20 years for the plant to start flowering.
