Centropogon vaughianus

Native from Mexico through Central America and tropical South America, this genus in the bellflower family includes perennial herbs, shrubs, and scrambling plants. Many species inhabit humid forests in the Andes. The flowers have tubular corollas with five unequal lobes, and their anthers join to form a tube around the style. Pollen is presented as the style pushes through this tube. Like other members of its family, these plants contain milky sap. The fruits are fleshy berries containing numerous small seeds. Photographed in Ecuador.
