Cecropia (species unidentified)

Native from Mexico through the tropical Americas to northeastern Argentina, this genus consists of fast-growing trees in the nettle family. The large leaves are divided into lobes radiating from a central point. Many species colonize forest openings, river margins, and disturbed ground. Hollow stem sections provide nesting space for ants, and the leaf-stalk bases produce food for them. In many species, resident Azteca ants help defend the trees against herbivores and climbing vines. Photographed in Colombia.
