Cavendishia tarapotana
Native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, this evergreen shrub in the heath family grows in soil or on trees and can reach about 16 feet tall. It inhabits wet forests, cloud forests, and disturbed forest margins. In Colombia, it is recorded between about 3,300 and 6,600 feet. Glossy, dark pink to red bracts surround white tubular flowers with a red band near the mouth. The flower clusters continue developing as older flowers fall. Its berries are edible and juicy, although not very sweet. Photographed in Ecuador.
