Cavendishia (species unidentified)

Native from Mexico through Central America to Bolivia and northern Brazil, this genus consists of evergreen shrubs in the heath family. Species grow in soil or on trees, sometimes climbing through surrounding vegetation. Many inhabit wet mountain cloud forests. They have tubular flowers and showy colored bracts; birds disperse their seeds. Colombia has the greatest diversity of species. Hummingbirds reach nectar deep inside the tubular flowers and carry pollen between plants. Photographed in Colombia.
