A Cavendishia cluster has broad pink bracts surrounding cream-and-pink calyces with long pink styles

Cavendishia (species unidentified)

Native from Mexico through Central America to Bolivia and northern Brazil, this genus consists of evergreen shrubs in the heath family. Species grow in soil or on trees as epiphytes. They have leathery leaves and clusters of tubular flowers, often surrounded by showy colored bracts. The fruits are small, dark berries containing many tiny seeds. Hummingbirds reach nectar deep inside the tubular flowers and carry pollen between plants. Photographed in Colombia.
