Catesbaea Spinosa

Catesbaea spinosa is native to the Caribbean, typically found in dry forests and scrublands. The species is adapted to warm, arid conditions and generally occurs in lowland habitats where seasonal droughts are common. Due to its restricted distribution and specialized habitat, the plant is considered uncommon in much of its range. Known as spiny lilythorn in some references, this shrub can reach up to about 10 feet in height and bears distinctive, rigid spines along its stems. The yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers are pendulous and showy, usually solitary, and can measure up to 4 inches long. These flowers are notable for their tubular form, which is specialized for pollination by long-tongued moths. The combination of spiny stems and large, tubular flowers is a distinguishing characteristic within its genus. Photographed in Florida.
