Castilleja nubigena plant growing in páramo vegetation with upright stems tipped by vivid red bracts and surrounded by grasses and purple wildflowers
Castilleja nubigena

Castilleja nubigena is native to the high-altitude páramo ecosystems of the northern Andes at elevations often exceeding 10,000 ft. The plant produces erect stems bearing narrow green leaves and striking terminal clusters of scarlet bracts that enclose small, tubular true flowers. The red bracts are the main visual feature and stand out against the muted tones of páramo vegetation. Photographed in Ecuador.
