Close-up of pale yellow star-shaped Byttneria aculeata flowers with long, slender petals and fine surface texture against a dark background
Byttneria aculeata

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Byttneria aculeata is a woody climbing shrub in the mallow family, Malvaceae, recognized for its small, star-shaped flowers and climbing habit supported by tendrils. Flowers are borne in small clusters and display five narrow, often translucent sepals and elongated petals with a pale yellow to greenish hue. The reproductive structures are distinctive, with protruding styles and stamens arranged around a central column. Byttneria aculeata is adapted to warm, humid climates and can be found from Mexico through Central America and into parts of South America, thriving in well-drained soils and partial shade. Photographed in Colombia.
