Buteogallus meridionalis is a large bird of prey native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America. This hawk primarily inhabits open landscapes, such as savannas, grasslands, wetlands, and occasionally low-altitude agricultural areas, where it is often spotted perched on fence posts or low trees, scanning the ground for prey. The savanna hawk is distinguished by its long legs and relatively broad wings, which allow it to adapt to its terrestrial hunting style. It preys on a variety of small animals, including rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and large insects. Unlike many other hawks, it often forages on the ground, taking advantage of its long legs to stalk or pounce on its prey. It is also known to follow fires in grasslands, capturing small animals that attempt to flee from the flames. When hunting in wetland areas, it may wade into shallow water to catch amphibians and small fish. The population of the savanna hawk is currently stable and not considered endangered.
