Burbidgea schizocheila

Native to the tropical rainforests of Borneo, Burbidgea schizocheila is a rare and striking member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) known for its vivid and highly ornamental floral display. This species thrives in lowland and hill forest habitats, where it benefits from warm, humid conditions and filtered light beneath the forest canopy. It grows as a rhizomatous perennial herb, producing lush, lanceolate leaves that provide a dark green backdrop to its dazzling blossoms. The flowers emerge in dense clusters and are characterized by their unique, deeply split labellum, from which the species name “schizocheila” — meaning “split lip” — is derived. The elongated, narrow petals flare outward in a starburst-like arrangement, with a rich orange hue that intensifies toward the tips, making the bloom highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and possibly nectar-feeding birds. Flowering typically occurs during the wetter parts of the year, with each inflorescence capable of producing multiple sequential blooms over several weeks. As a relatively uncommon ornamental outside its native range, Burbidgea schizocheila is sought after by collectors of exotic gingers and botanical gardens aiming to preserve rare tropical species.
