Native to northern South America, Bunchosia argentea is a small evergreen tree. It is best known for its distinctive, oblong, bright orange to red fruits, often referred to as "peanut butter fruit" due to their soft texture and characteristic flavor when ripe. Typically reaching heights of 10 to 25 feet, the plant has simple, alternate leaves with smooth or slightly wavy margins, and small yellow flowers arranged in terminal or axillary clusters. The fruits are thin-skinned with a soft, sweet pulp containing one or two seeds, and they are consumed fresh, blended into drinks, or used in desserts in local cuisines. It is valued for its extended fruiting season, often producing multiple harvests throughout the year in tropical environments. Photographed in Ecuador.
