Brunfelsia nitida (Lady of the Night)

Native to Cuba, this evergreen shrub is grown for long, fragrant flowers that release a clove-like scent at night. The tubular blooms can reach about 5 inches long and change from white to cream as they age. In warm Florida gardens, it can grow about 8 feet tall and flower throughout the year. Its oval leaves remain green, and the flowers are followed by small orange seed capsules. It has been introduced to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. The plant is poisonous if eaten. Photographed in Barranquilla, Colombia and Florida.
