Close-up of a Bromelia balansae inflorescence with bright red bracts surrounding a dense cluster of small tubular flowers with white petals and purple centers
Bromelia balansae

Bromelia balansae is native to southwest South America, where it grows in subtropical and tropical climates. This terrestrial bromeliad can form large rosettes over 5 feet wide. The species produces a striking inflorescence once in its lifetime, typically during the summer, with vivid red bracts that can persist for several months, enclosing numerous small tubular flowers with white petals and purple throats. After blooming and fruiting, the parent rosette dies, leaving behind offsets that mature over several years. Its tart fruits are edible. Photographed in Florida.
