Spikes of white flowers with yellow sepals and large edible green leaves
Brassicaceae

Originating in the Iran-Turanian region of Europe, the family known as Brassicaceae has dispersed across the globe. North America, South America, and Australia host wild varieties, often deemed as weeds due to their invasive propensity. Commonly referred to as the mustard family, its members largely manifest as herbs, although shrubs also find representation. Their economic significance is underscored by a plethora of edible and ornamental variants. The name 'mustard' is a nod to the sharp, potent flavor bestowed by sulfur metabolites known as glucosinolates. The edibility of Brassicaceae is well-celebrated, with vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, radish, and turnip being household names. Their nutritional profile is rich in bioactive compounds, especially isothiocyanates, which are the architects of their unique flavor and also contribute to health benefits. Photographed in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia.
