Blakea parasitica

Native from Costa Rica through northern South America to northern Brazil, Blakea parasitica is a woody epiphyte of wet tropical forest. It establishes on tree branches and develops leathery opposite leaves. Large deep magenta flowers have thick spreading petals, pale curved anthers, and colorful enclosing bracts that remain conspicuous around the blossom. Photographed in Colombia.
