Billbergia amoena
Native to Brazil, this perennial bromeliad grows on trees, rocks, and the ground in Atlantic forests and coastal sand-plain vegetation. It forms dense clumps and reaches about 14 to 22 inches tall when flowering. Its rosettes hold rainwater, creating small reservoirs within the plant. Pink or red bracts surround tubular green flowers that often have blue tips, followed by fleshy berries. Flower color and rosette form vary considerably within the species. It spreads through rhizomes, producing new plants that can be separated for propagation. Photographed in Florida.
