Begonia urticae (Nettle-leaved Begonia)

Native from Costa Rica to northwestern Venezuela and Peru, this herb or subshrub can trail along the ground or climb through vegetation. In Colombia, it grows between about 5,250 and 13,100 feet in Andean forests and páramo. It also occurs in shaded places and along cloud-forest paths. Its stems may be reddish, and its leaves have sharply toothed edges. The flowers are white, pink, or red, with separate male and female blooms. Its fruits have three horn-like projections and a projecting central beak. Photographed in Colombia.
