Endemic to high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes in Ecuador and Peru, this perennial begonia inhabits moist, rocky slopes and cliff faces where constant mist and cool temperatures prevail. It produces upright, slender red stems bearing solitary flowers with eight white petals, one or more often tinged pink, and a bright yellow cluster of stamens at the center. Below the open bloom, developing buds display a deeper pink coloration. The species’ distinctive eight-petaled flowers set it apart from many congeners and contribute to its horticultural appeal among advanced growers.
