Begonia (species unidentified)
Native mainly to tropical and subtropical regions, these herbs and small shrubs are grown for their flowers and often strikingly patterned foliage. Their leaves typically have unequal sides. The genus includes tuberous plants, plants with creeping rhizomes, and upright cane-like plants. Separate male and female flowers usually occur on the same plant. Female flowers have a swollen, often winged ovary below the flower. The fruits contain numerous dust-like seeds and may be capsules or berries. Photographed in Colombia.
