Barnadesia horrida

Native to the high Andes of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, Barnadesia horrida is a spiny shrub or small tree, adapted to elevations between 6,500 and 12,000 feet. This species thrives in páramo, montane shrubland, and rocky slopes. Its flowers feature elongated, narrow ray florets in vivid shades of pink to magenta, often reflexed, encircling a dense cluster of central disc florets. The plant’s leaves are small, alternately arranged, and equipped with sharp spines at their tips. Photographed in Peru.
