Native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas, Barleria oenotheroides is distributed from Mexico through Central America into northern South America, where it inhabits open woodlands, scrub, and roadside areas at low to mid elevations. This perennial shrub belongs to the family Acanthaceae and is recognized for its vibrant yellow, five-lobed corollas that resemble those of evening primroses, which is reflected in its species epithet. The flowers are zygomorphic and adapted for pollination by bees, which are attracted by both their bright color and accessible nectar. Leaves are opposite, ovate to lanceolate, and covered with fine hairs, contributing to the plant’s drought tolerance by reducing water loss. Photographed in Colombia.
