Baccharis boliviensis branches bear clusters of pale yellow flower heads and narrow green leaves against lichen-covered rock

Baccharis boliviensis

Native to the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina, this perennial shrub grows about 1 to 3 feet tall. It can dominate the dry shrublands known locally as tolares. In Chile, it occurs between about 4,900 and 15,400 feet, growing on rocky slopes and plateaus. Its narrow, resinous leaves are aromatic, and numerous small flower heads cluster at the branch tips. Male and female flowers occur on separate plants. The small fruits carry fine hairs that aid dispersal. The woody branches are used as fuel. Photographed in Peru.
