Avicularia is a South American genus of arboreal tarantulas. The World Spider Catalog currently recognizes multiple species, and reliable separation often requires details that cannot be confirmed from a single photograph. Members of the genus have dense leg and body hairs, broad foot pads used for climbing, and a compact arrangement of eyes near the front of the carapace.

These spiders generally use silken retreats in tree cavities, beneath loose bark, among epiphytes, or within other sheltered spaces above ground. They detect prey and vibration through sensitive hairs and subdue insects and other small animals with their fangs. New World tarantulas can defend themselves with detachable urticating hairs, and handling can expose both the person and the spider to unnecessary risk.
