An Artocarpus nitidus branch carries rounded yellow-green fruits among glossy leaves

Artocarpus nitidus

Native to the Philippines, this evergreen tree belongs to the mulberry family and is related to breadfruit and jackfruit. In the Philippines, it grows in lowland primary and secondary forests, from sea level to about 500 feet. Separate male and female flowerheads occur on the same tree. Numerous small flowers are crowded together within each head, and the female flowers contribute to a fleshy multiple fruit. The foliage is leathery, and the plant produces latex, a feature shared with other members of its genus. Photographed in Florida.
