Highway that goes through the destroyed town of Amero
Armero, Colombia

Amero is in the Magdalena River Valley east of the Andes central mountain range. This former small town was destroyed by lahars (mudflows) in 1985 caused by the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, which killed over 20,000 people. The high death toll was due to a combination of government incompetence, misinformation and ignorance still alive and well in Colombia.
