Cluster of ardisia escallonioides flowers with white petals speckled in pink and yellow stamens, emerging from glossy green foliage
Ardisia escallonioides

Native to the coastal regions of Florida, the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and parts of Central America, ardisia escallonioides, commonly known as the marlberry, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of up to 33 ft. It grows naturally in coastal hammocks, pine rocklands, and well-drained limestone soils, showing high tolerance to salt spray and seasonal drought. The plant produces dense clusters of small, five-petaled flowers that are white with faint pink speckling, accompanied by conspicuous yellow stamens. These blooms are followed by round, purplish-black fruits. Marlberry has been cultivated as an ornamental plant in subtropical landscapes for its glossy leaves, fragrant flowers, and attractive fruit display. Photographed in Florida.
