Ardisia crenata carries clusters of small bright red fruits beneath cream-edged green leaves

Ardisia crenata (Coral Ardisia)

Native from northeastern India to Japan and the Philippines, this evergreen shrub grows mainly in subtropical regions. Its leathery leaves have distinct scalloped margins, and clusters of small white or pinkish flowers produce shiny, bright red fruits. It has naturalized in Florida, where it is invasive in moist woodlands and can form dense colonies that displace native plants. Its berries and foliage are suspected to be poisonous to livestock. It is cultivated for its ornamental foliage and fruit, including as a potted plant during Lunar New Year celebrations, when the red fruits symbolize vitality and prosperity. Photographed in Colombia.
