Close-up of arcytophyllum thymifolium with small white four-petaled flowers emerging among dense, tiny green leaves
Arcytophyllum thymifolium

Native to the high-altitude páramos of northern South America, arcytophyllum thymifolium is a compact evergreen shrub adapted to harsh, windy, and cold environments above 9,000 ft. It thrives in nutrient-poor, acidic soils and is typically found in open moorlands, rocky slopes, and exposed ridges where few other woody plants survive. The flowers, produced singly or in small clusters, have four bright white petals and emerge above the minute, overlapping leaves, which are thick and leathery to reduce moisture loss. Photographed in Ecuador.
