Cluster of elongated bright red tubular flowers of Aphelandra gracilis extending from a central spike against large green leaves
Aphelandra gracilis

Aphelandra gracilis is a tropical flowering shrub native to the moist forests and cloud-covered slopes of Central America. It is recognized for its slender, tubular red flowers arranged along upright spikes, which contrast sharply with the plant’s large, textured green leaves. The long, narrow corollas are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds, whose beaks and feeding behavior match the floral structure. Flowering generally occurs during the rainy season, when humidity levels are high and nectar availability is optimal for pollinators. This evergreen species thrives in semi-shaded habitats with rich, well-draining soils and consistent moisture. In the wild, it often grows along forest margins and clearings where it can receive filtered light. Photographed in Panama.
