Native to Mexico and the West Indies, this upright perennial or annual flowering plant thrives in warm climates with full sun and well-drained soil. Commonly known as summer snapdragon due to its similar flower form, it belongs to the Plantaginaceae family and produces dense spikes of two-lipped flowers in shades of pink, purple, white, or blue. Blooming prolifically from late spring until the first frost, the flowers are mildly fragrant. The foliage consists of narrow, lance-shaped leaves that are slightly glossy and aromatic when crushed, which helps deter some pests. Angelonia angustifolia is valued for its heat and drought tolerance. Propagation is typically achieved by stem cuttings or seeds, and improved cultivars have been developed for compact growth and a wider range of colors. Photographed in Florida.
