Andropogon gerardi 'Holy Smoke' (Big Bluestem)

A garden selection of big bluestem, a perennial grass native to North and Central America, this cultivar was introduced by Intrinsic Perennial Gardens. It forms substantial clumps about 6 to 7 feet tall. Silvered foliage develops smoky purple and red highlights through much of the growing season. Branched flower spikes characteristic of big bluestem rise above the leafy stems later in the year. The cultivar was selected for its distinctive, sustained foliage color. Photographed in Florida.
