The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a spectacular and geologically unique isolated mountain range located in northern Colombia, just 26 miles from the Caribbean Sea. It is the world’s highest coastal mountain range, rising abruptly from sea level to approximately 18,700 feet at its highest points—Pico Cristóbal Colón and Pico Simón Bolívar. These twin peaks are the highest in Colombia and rank among the most prominent summits on Earth, due to their dramatic elevation gain relative to surrounding terrain. A large portion of the range is protected within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park.
